Problem Solving

If you are visiting this site because of specific problem you are having on the cello, you can look through these common complaints and find guidance as to which pages would be most useful.  Please take note that if you are having any pain, discomfort or inhibiting tension, it would be wise to begin with Principles of Balance, and Balance and Planes.  These two concepts are most likely going to underlie every recovery process.  A clear understanding of these general concepts will facilitate any specific work that you need to do.

1.  Tension/pain in neck and/or shoulders see:  Principles of Balance,  Balance and Planes, Movement and Breath, Sitting, Left Hand/Arm Balance, Right Hand/Arm Balance.

2.  Pain in right hand, wrist or thumb see: Bow Hold, Right Hand/Arm Balance, Rotational Force.

3.  Pain in left arm, hand, wrist see:  Principles of Balance,  Balance and Planes, Left Hand/Arm Balance.

4.  Tight vibrato see:  Principles of Balance,  Balance and Planes, Left Hand/Arm Balance, Vibrato.

5. Forced sound/scratchy tone see: Principles of Balance,  Balance and Planes, Right Hand/Arm Balance, Rotational Force.
